Seed Production

A breeder seed constitutes the basis of all further seed production and is used in production of foundation seeds. Breeder seed is provided by Govt. of India through Research Institutions and is sold to State Seed Corporation, Registered Seed Growers, Govt. Farm and SAU for multiplication to get Foundation seeds. The Foundation seed is used for multiplication/production of certified seeds, which are sold to farmers for raising crops on a large scale. West Bengal State Seeds Certification Agency (WBSSCA) inspects and supervises the entire process of seed certification from field verification to sealing, bagging and tagging of seeds of the seed growers as per certification norms.

The process of seed development is narrated below:

• Procurement of Breeder seeds from Govt. of India.
• Multiplication of Breeder seeds to the foundation seeds through growers and in its own farms.
• Distribution of foundation seeds to the growers for multiplication to certified seed.
• Receipt of either raw/ processed seeds from growers.
• Processing of raw seeds in seed processing plant.
• Certification of processed seeds for sale to farmers.
