Seed Production

WBSSCL started seed production through Registered Grower in Rabi season 1982. The WBSSCL organizes seed production through its Registered Grower, Seed Producer, NGO, Government Farms and State Agricultural University in Kharif, Rabi & Zaid season every year to meet up the demand of farmers as well as Government. About 90% seed production are registered under Seed Multiplication Programme of certified seed in the field where nearly 1200 seed growers are scattered over the State and 10% of area are covered under certified seed production in the farms of GOWB and SAU. Now, WBSSCL adopted 3 (three) government farms for multiplication of breeder seeds for maximization of foundation seed production (to increase seed multiplication ratio). The WBSSCL is producing seeds and propagates through the contract farming system for achieving the goal and accelerate the business turnover. Beside this different Co-operative & SKUS are also keeping liaison in respect of seed production. WBSSCL is producing seed in the field of farmers and Government Farms.

Multiplication of different classes of seeds

Breeder Seed:-

Department of Agriculture, Co-operation and Farmers Welfare (DACFW), Government of India collects indent for different breeder seed for multiplication (production of foundation seed) from the Department of Agriculture, Government of West Bengal well in advance for three years. Accordingly, DACFW allots breeder seed of different varieties from various sources throughout India. WBSSCL procures breeder seeds from different research institute (like IARI, NARI, RRS, CPRS, etc.) season wise as per allotment. Mostly 60 percent of breeder seeds are multiplied in the Government Farm and 40 percent in the Registered Growers field where technical supervision are available.

The programme registered under State Seed Certification Agency by paying of usual fees for multiplication. The Seed Certification Agency is responsible for certifying the seeds under their direct supervision to make available the foundation seed stock with bagging, sealing, tagging etc.

Foundation Seed:-

Foundation seeds are produced from breeder seed and allow to multiply the same under certification programme for production of certified seed. Seeds are multiplied in the Govt. farm as well as in the field of registered grower under the direct supervision of WBSSCL and WBSSCA. The farmers are registered their name under certification programme by paying of usual fees. Certified seeds are available after processing, bagging, sealing, tagging etc. for marketing.

Certified seed are produced under sponsorship of WBSSCL and marketed in different Govt. programme through the government machinery and through the trade channel.
Production of foundation seeds out of breeder seeds multiplication.

Certified Seed:-

Dearth of foundation seed certified stage – I seeds are multiply for increasing the volume of certified seed to available at the farmers door as per their requirement with affordable price. Accordingly, certified stage –I seed are multiplying as per norm under the guidance of State Seed Certification Agency.

Certified seed are produced under sponsorship of WBSSCL and marketed in different Govt. programme through the government machinery and through the trade channel.
Production of certified seeds out of foundation seeds multiplication.

Hybrid Seed:-

WBSSCL produces hybrid seed of paddy and maize of public patented variety. The parent lines are collected from different Government Institutions and multiply through the sponsored grower. The sponsored grower registered their name under the Seed Certification Agency by paying of requisite fees. The entire programme supervised by the Seed Certification Agency under the patronized by WBSSCL.
